ECQ Responses

ECQ 1) Strategic Thinking - Formulates objectives and priorities, and implements plans consistent with the long-term interests of the organization in a global environment.  Capitalizes on opportunities and manages risks.

Situation:       Since 1999, I have been charged with determining strategies to successfully generate court reporting and transcription service contracts with Federal government clients.

Task:               In order to generate business, I need to ensure competitiveness while simultaneously giving priority to company business development and long-term profit goals.

Action:            To determine profitable, competitive pricing structures, I have thoroughly researched and analyzed client requirements, industry trends, competitor activities, and internal operations.  Taking my findings, I have then strategically priced and developed competitive bid proposals for presentation to clients.

Results:         As a result, our company has been awarded major 5-year government contracts generating multi-million dollars in revenue.

ECQ 2) Team Building - Inspires and fosters team commitment, spirit, pride, and trust.  Facilitates cooperation and motivates team members to accomplish group goals.

Situation:       In January 2007, I bid on and was awarded a Federal Contract to provide nationwide services to a client who had previously contracted with us to cover only one of their four regions.  To accommodate this contract, which was set up as a 1-year contract with 4 option years, my staff was going to have to assume a substantial increase in work volume and were reluctant to take on the challenge.

Task:               To ensure we would be able to effectively meet contractual requirements, I needed my staff s support and a team-collaboration approach toward achieving objectives.

Action:             I strategically developed a realistic plan for each department and then personally worked with each department s staff over the course of 2 months to launch, refine and implement the plan.  During this time, I encouraged feedback, solicited their recommendations and actively responded by evaluating and troubleshooting inefficiencies and problems and then implementing solutions-focused corrective measures.

Results:         By working hand-in-hand with each department, I was highly successful in

gaining their enthusiastic support and we were able to achieve initial contract timelines.  As a result, in April of 2008 we were awarded the Option Year 1 contract, generating high-volume revenue for the company.  Additionally, because of our success in the initial year, each contract team member was recognized for their contributions with monetary bonuses, a dynamic tool for facilitating ongoing enthusiasm and increased morale.

ECQ 3) Accountability - Holds self and other accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.  Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work.  Accepts responsibility for mistakes.  Complies with established control systems and rules.

Situation:       After successfully working with each of my departments for 2 months in early 2007 to establish policies, procedures and processes for achieving critical contract requirements, I needed each department to competently self-manage itself without my extensive participation in day-to-day operations.

Task:               To accomplish this, I needed to delegate accountability to each Department Head while ensuring each department continued to work cohesively in line with my action plan.

Action:            I reviewed activities of the first 2 months, both independently and in collaboration with each of 6 Department Heads, to ensure that we had resolved any identified problems and also brainstormed to identify and circumvent any other potential problems within the plan that may negatively impact future operations.  Confident that critical problems, both prior and potential, were effectively addressed, I then assigned clear responsibilities to each of my Department Heads, making each accountable for a  specific component of the entire transcript production process.  Concurrently, I held myself accountable for overseeing the process from inception through delivery to ensure each department was meeting critical deadlines and quality standards.

Results:         By making each department accountable for 1 key component  of the whole I was able to create a streamlined process and overcome costly mistakes that had been made in the early stages of implementing my plan.  This resulted in boosting efficiency, productivity and quality, achieving crucial deadlines and maximizing client satisfaction with our services, subsequently leading to contract renewal. Additionally, we were able to reduce labor hour costs and increase bottom-line profits.

ECQ 4) Human Capital Management - Builds and manages workforce based on organizational goals, budget considerations, and staffing needs.  Ensures that employees are appropriately recruited, selected, appraised, and rewarded; takes action to address performance problems.  Manages a multi-sector workforce and a variety of work situations.

Situation:       As a Vice President of Finance and Operations with Heritage Reporting Corporation since 1999, I am responsible for addressing our staffing needs while taking budgets and operational goals under consideration.

Task:               Because we are so reliant on both new and renewal contract business, staffing requirements routinely fluctuate based on volume of business.  My task is to consistently ensure we have the optimal level and mix of staff to accommodate contracts/projects, requiring that I effectively balance human capital to meet business volume while avoiding over-staffing.

Action:            I have taken a holistic approach where the overall picture is critical to maximizing use of labor dollars and human assets.  For instance, by developing and implementing proactive employee training and development programs I am able to create cross-functional teams who are qualified to take on a broad range of responsibilities, which extends into building multiple departments that are able to work collaboratively and supportively toward a common objective.  This allows us to substantially increase work volume output capabilities, which is a key factor in effectively  accommodating fluctuating work volume while avoiding the added costs of training and hiring additional staff during peak volume periods.  Additionally, I conduct routine employee performance evaluations that have a two-fold purpose.  First, this gives me the opportunity to identify problems in productivity and efficiency and then discuss with the employee to define and implement solutions.  But just as importantly, this gives me a venue for rewarding team members for superior performance through bonuses and awards, a vital tool in building motivated, high-performance teams.

Results:         Through strategic and proactive human resource management, we have been able to maximize productivity, efficiency and return on labor dollar investment while creating a positive, motivating work environment for our staff that leads to increased retention.

ECQ 5) Influencing/Negotiating - Persuades others; builds consensus through give and take; gains cooperation from others.

Situation:       As Vice President, Finance and Operations, one of my key responsibilities since 1999 has been to generate government contract/renewal awards.

Task:               In the capacity of Primary Point of Contact to all contractors and/or contract representatives, I need to effectively influence and negotiate with these key contacts on a daily basis.

Action:            To achieve our contracting goals, I initially consulted with clients to clearly define their individual contracting needs and used this information to develop competitive bid proposals tailored toward the customer.  I then presented proposals to key contacts, responsively addressing any inquiries and concerns to influence their contracting decisions and persuasively negotiated terms and conditions to capture their business.

Results:         As a result of my dynamic presentation, negotiation and strategic relationship building skills, I have successfully generated multi-million dollars in revenue, closing 3 of 4 five-year government contract renewals, with the 4th projected to close in October of this year.
