As a part of the US Department of Energy (DOE) national user research facility, contribute dynamic leadership skills in managing all user research activities as a host for several user research projects. Maintain full accountability for implementing DOE, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) strategies regarding safety and environmental stewardship, while coordinating daily user research operations in the assigned laboratories, demonstrating exceptional project management and organization skills in achieving operational goals and timelines.
Serve as a Cognizant Space Manager (CSM), providing the first line of defense in ensuring safe research working environment for users coming from a very diverse research background and working in the facilities. Build and establish key relationships, as the host and scientific point of contact to several scientific user proposals from external universities involving research in nanotechnology, electronic properties of thin films and micro/nano-fabrication of devices.
Also, perform as a representative member on the CSM council in Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), which is a national scientific user facility at PNNL. Advise and collaborate with the operations manager on new lab safety procedure implementation and user interactions. Exhibit solid leadership qualities in educating other CSMs on newly adopted strategy changes.
Apply extensive experience working in very diverse user research projects management environment toward supporting user research activities at this facility. Directly oversee all user research activities at EMSL s micro-fabrication facility as a CSM and delegate them in Focused Ion Beam, MOCVD and MBE deposition laboratories.
Conduct comprehensive review and analysis in successfully performing extensive scientific research.
Extensively research the nanoscale effects in oxides & transport properties, showing that depth dependent oxygen desoption study in nanocrystalline ceria is promising in catalysis and fuel cell research where complex oxygen transport can be systematically studied. Demonstrate the controlled electrochemical etch process in silicon can achieve control over the nano-porosity and frequency dependent capacitance measurements in perovskites is attributed to nonequiliburium transport and slow carrier reorganization defined by polaronic hopping. Prove a process, ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) can be very useful to produce nanophase materials like TiO2, which has high refractive index, wide band gap, transparency throughout the visible and infra-red region, high chemical stability and excellent hardness.

Analyze oxide thin films and related interface effects, establishing that lower ionic conductivity and high oxygen uptake in nanocrystalline ceria are a result of absence of long-range lattice ordering and inactive surface oxygen vacancy sites due to oxygenation. Illustrate critical thickness in epitaxial ceria films is ~64 nm where optimum ion channeling is correlated with strain relaxation and low surface roughness, and that the solubility limit of Cr in ZnO is very low and Cr prefers to have octahedral rather than tetrahedral coordination.
Proficiently investigate Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrolytes, explaining that combination of glancing angle sputter deposition and sol-gel can create high density YSZ/Ceria nanocrystalline-columns for good electrolyte conductivity and that transport in doped-ceria electrolyte differ as a function of thickness, orientation and dopant concentration.
Examine Micro/Nano Fabrication Technology, confirming a process where rounding nature of isotropic etching combined with undercutting can be used to microfabricate laterally ordered Si nanotips with 15 nm tip radius. Effectively prove a process to create SiO2 microdisks arrays for optics and light trapping applications. photoemission measurements were performed on the disk and inside the cavity to show uniform oxygen to silicon ratio. Optical lithography and microfabrication of silicon structures were performed to study the light emission from the silicon nano-tips.
Research High Frequency Microwave/Magnetic Materials and optical ceramics, showing that hexagonal Ba-ferrite films can be produced with lowest ferromagnetic resonance high frequency losses at 58 GHz.
Explained that there is a strong thickness dependence on the ferromagnetic resonance properties in Ba-ferrite films where the spin wave resonances in a perpendicular position were obtained for films in the range of 300-460 nm, and that excellent decomposition of MOCVD precursor can be obtained to produce ZnO films with lowest carbon content which is useful for achieving better optical properties for ZnO.
Several examples of primary author basic research at PNNL include: Phase Separation in Chromium Thin Films; Lateral Ordering of SiO2 Nano-tips; Oxygen Diffusion Studies in CeO2; Ceria Impingement in YSZ Columnar Nanostructures; Channeling, Morphology, Microstructure Effects at Epitaxial CeO2/YSZ Film Interfaces; Controlled porosity in silicon; and Phase separations and role of carbon in MOCVD grown ZnO Films.

Hours: 40 Per Week
Post-Doctorate Researcher; Salary: $35,000/yr; 9/1999-12/2001
Initiated, developed and implemented a program based on thin film deposition of semi-conducting half metallic heusler alloys for the study of spin tunneling junctions and spin valves on using GaAs. Optimized a process for the deposition barium ferrite films by pulsed laser deposition and produced films with the lowest high frequency (microwave frequency) losses, which were the lowest reported at that time. Demonstrated the potential applications in the high frequency satellite and radar telecommunications. Studied non-linear temperature dependence properties in magnetic films with colossal magneto-resistance (CMR).
